Preparing for your doctor's visit, alternative health helplines, preventative tips, & comforting resources

The first step is to visit your doctor.

How do I prepare?

We know visiting the doctor can be frightening - especially regarding an under-researched, stigmatized disorder such as PMDD. However, it is important to recognize that doctors are here to help you, but only if you

advocate for yourself first.

To help you do just that, we have listed 10 tips to help you have a successful doctor's visit.

Know reason & goals.

Be clear on the reason you are going to the doctor and what exactly you would like to address to them. Also, keep in mind what you would like to get out of your visit, and what your ultimate goal regarding your condition is.

Write down any questions you need answered.

Do you have any questions about PMDD or other menstrual disorders? Any questions about your specific symptoms? It can be easy to forget things when you're nervous. If you have any lingering questions or uncertainties, make sure to write these down on a small note page or on your phone.

Bring someone with you for moral support.

Going to the doctor's office alone can be challenging. Instead, see if you can confide in a trusted family member, friend, or other individual who may be willing to come with you. This can help ease your nerves and remind you that your struggles are valid and you deserve to seek help. Also, this individual can help ask questions & write down details that may slip your mind.

Write down every name.

Make sure to write down the name of your specific diagnosis, the names of the medicine/medicines prescribed, the routine instructions for those medicines, the potential side effects, and other relevant details. These small facts are easy to miss, but can make a vital difference. Don't be afraid to ask for spelling and clarification.

Identify alternate treatment pathways.

Sometimes, your doctor's main method of treatment may not be your most preferred method. If you are uncomfortable or doubtful about anything prescribed or told to you, don't be hesitant to ask for alternative methods. Prioritize your wants and needs!

Know effects of not taking the medicine.

Is this medicine critical to your mental or physical health? Are there severe consequences for stopping this medicine? For example, what would occur if you forgot to take your medication. Be well aware of the consequences and severity of NOT taking the medicine.

Note details of a follow up appointment.

Follow up appointments are vital to ensuring the treatment plan is working for you the way it should be. Make sure this is scheduled and know the details!

Know how to contact your provider at all times.

Emergencies can happen. Stay cautious and know how to contact your provider in case of emergencies. keep this information in an easy to locate place, in case a loved one must contact them as well.

Be Confident.

This is the MOST important step! This is your health on the line. You deserve help, safety, and happiness. Stay confident in yourself and place trust in your doctors, as they are there to help you. However, never be afraid to fight for your beliefs either. Good luck & remember to stay confident.
